How to Participate
Sacred Roots is for every Foundational Black American. Here is how to bring the spirit of FBA Lineage Week into your life and community.
Day 1 · July 1st · Opening in Light
Wearing All White & Calling Their Names
On July 1st - the opening of Sacred Roots: FBA Lineage Week - we wear all white from sunrise to sunset. White is worn as a sacred act of spiritual protection, purity of purpose, and divine connection.
This is not fashion - it is spiritual armor. Across ancestral traditions, white has served as a shield against negative energy.
We begin this day by calling out the names of our ancestors - speaking them aloud, thanking them for every sacrifice, every prayer, every act of endurance that brought us here. We continually ask them for divine guidance and protection throughout the day and throughout the entire week.
Light a candle at dawn. Create an ancestral altar with photos and mementos. Share family stories. Call back your energy, your power, your divine inheritance. Step into this week protected, powerful, and whole.
Day 4 · July 4th · The Centerpiece
We Built This
The centerpiece of FBA Lineage Week falls on the Fourth of July. On this day, we include ourselves in the celebration - because even though the majority of our ancestors were not yet free in 1776, they were still profoundly significant in building America.
The roads, the fields, the economy, the culture - Foundational Black Americans laid the very foundation this nation stands on. We celebrate the Fourth not in spite of our history, but because of our undeniable role in making America what it is.
Spiritual Practices
These practices can be woven throughout the entire week, creating a sacred rhythm of remembrance, reflection, and renewal.
Candle Lighting
Light a candle each morning of the week in honor of your ancestors. Let the flame represent the light they kept alive through darkness.
Meditation & Prayer
Begin and end each day with meditation or prayer. Quiet your mind, connect with your spirit, and listen for the wisdom of those who came before.
Song & Spiritual Music
Let music carry your spirit. Play spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz - the music our ancestors created. Sing together when possible.
Ancestral Stories
Share oral histories with your family. Tell the stories of your grandparents, great-grandparents, and the journey that brought you here.
Gratitude Practice
Each day, express gratitude for what your ancestors endured so you could exist. Write letters of gratitude to elders in your life.
Cleansing & Renewal
Cleanse your space with sage, palo santo, or through prayer. Release negative energy and make room for ancestral blessings.
